“Hi, my name is Thaís and I’m from Uberlândia, Brazil!

The first time Bulgaria came into my life was in a volleyball game I went in my city, where Brazil won in the last set! In the audience, I saw only one family with Bulgaria’s flag and a sign in Cyrillic’s, and that really got my attention. At home, I “goggled” some information about the country and looked up in MyAiesec, if they have any spot in Bulgaria also.

Then, I found one TN with all the characteristics I wanted, the most important of all, it was related with my Geography and Environment, my graduation major.

I’ve never heard about Blagoevgrad (I couldn’t even say the name right), and all my friends and family were asking me what I was going to do in Bulgaria. I didn’t had the answer for then at that time…

Suddenly I was already on the plane on my way to here!

I discovered that the opportunity to teach all my students about my country and about environment is priceless! Also as meeting amazing people at Bulgaria and making some friends I ‘m sure I’ll keep all my life!

I’m really changing myself here! I’m learning how to deal with adversities, challenges, the frustrations and the successes in the others and in myself.

And now I can answer then, that this is what I went here for…”

Why?

“I am Mayuko Giga, an intern from Japan.  I came all the way to Bulgaria for an internship to teach at Bulgarian high schools.  I chose to come to Bulgaria because it was a very unfamiliar country to me.  I have lived in the United States when I was a child, and last year, I visited Philippines with my professor and his class members.  In both of these countries I spoke in English and Japanese and I was with my family or friends.  America is a country everyone in the world knows what it’s about and Philippines is a country located very close to Japan.  I wanted something new.  I wanted to go to a place where I had no idea what it was like to live in it.  Everything is different from Japan in this country -culture, religion, history, language, and everything.  And this is my first time to travel abroad by myself.  It was like an adventure for me to take part in the internship.

For the internship, I am teaching 7th to 9th graders at a high school in Blagoevgrad.  I teach them about Japan and environment.  Some students are very interested and ask questions or share what they already know about Japan.  Some do not seem so interested, but I know having someone far away from Bulgaria as Japan come to their class and talk is something they cannot have so often, and I have the chance to give them an impact.  I love all my students, and I love the way they say “Konnichiwa” and “Sayonara” to me when they see me around.  I hope they were able to learn something from me and that I was able to give them a good impression of Japan.  I love meeting new people here, even the ladies in the market, or the bus driver.  I can read some of the Cyrillic alphabet now, and I had the opportunity to use English daily which I cannot do in Japan.  My internship will end very soon.  I am glad I chose to do an internship this summer.  I think I have learned a lot from all the experience I had here.  Thank you very much for having me as an intern this summer.  It was definitely a month and a half to remember!”
